What
are you seeking?
Some people seek fame
and fortune, others seek sporting glory, still others academic success.
All human beings seek meaning and purpose in life. But this is an
elusive quest. U2 sang, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". I
would suggest that many people can identify with those words. That big
"something" that is going to satisfy us and make sense of our lives
always seems to be just around the corner. But when we get around the
corner, all we see is another twist in the road. Some people would say
that this quest for meaning and purpose is pointless. According to the atheist Richard Dawkins, "The universe that we observe has precisely the
properties that we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no
purpose, no evil and no good, but blind, pitiless indifference." But is
our quest for the meaning of life really a waste of time?
The problem is that we
tend to seek after something when we should be seeking someone.
The material things of this world cannot satisfy us because God
has put eternity in our hearts. We were made to have fellowship with
the great Creator of the Universe. He is infinite, eternal, full of
love and truth. We do not have to go far to seek him. He is nearer to
us than the rhythmic beating of our hearts. But how can we find
him? Because God is seeking us. God has sent his Son, Jesus
Christ to seek and save the lost. In Jesus Christ we can know the
forgiveness of all our sins. He offers us a deeply satisfying
relationship with Almighty God. To a world that seeks but never finds,
he says, "Come to me and I will give you rest."
