Christian Spirituality
People
today often say that while they do not go to Church, they are very
interested in spirituality. They see that there must be something more
to life than the material things of this world. Such people long to get
in touch with some kind of spiritual reality.
Spirituality is all
about the human quest for God. Some try to find him in nature, others
by using New Age techniques such as transcendental meditation.
Christian spirituality is quite different. The Christian view is that
we can only find God because he first seeks us. Christian
spirituality has its origin not in the human longing for God, but in
God's love for human beings. "We love him because he first loved us."
(1 John 5:19).
Christian spirituality
is focused upon Jesus Christ, God's only Son. Why did Jesus come into
our world as man? He came on a quest. Jesus said, "the Son of Man
has come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10).
Because we are lost, we can never find God by our own spiritual
efforts. That is why God sent Jesus to seek and save us. Jesus'
mission to save lost human beings led directly to the cross where he
died to bring us back to God. Jesus was raised from the dead and
exalted to God's right hand in glory. He is able to save
completely those who come to God by him.
This leads to
involvement in a Christian community. In the New Testament,
“Church” does not mean the building in which people meet,
but the people themselves. Christians are called to spiritual growth by
being involved in Church life. By worshipping together, learning
together and caring for each other, Christians grow into spiritual
maturity.
Christian spirituality
is about God reaching down to us, revealing himself to us in the Bible
and reconciling us to himself through Jesus Christ. We only seek God
because he first seeks us and awakens us to seek him with all our
hearts. This is God-centred, not “my need centred”
spirituality.
